After landing the program's 15th blue-chip commitment in the 2027 recruiting class, Michigan football is on the verge of a top-10 ranking once again.
According to Rivals, the Wolverines are ranked 10th with three top-100 commitments. Four-star Lincoln Mageo (247 Sports composite rankings), who committed on Saturday, gives Kyle Whittingham 21 commitments and 15 four-stars in his first Michigan football recruiting class.
It's still early, but with a majority of the top 250 players in the 2027 class already committed, there probably won't be a ton of movement in the team rankings. Michigan might drop a little, but this will be a top-15 class in the worst-case scenario, with a very-strong percentage of blue-chip commitments (71.4 percent).
What to like about Kyle Whittinngham's first recruiting class
Michigan has four offensive line recruits, with three blue-chip prospects committed, via the 247 Sports composite rankings. Mageo is the latest. He is listed as an interior offensive lineman and could play center or guard, but has experience playing tackle, too.
Out of California, Michigan football O-line coach Jim Harding zeroed in on Mageo, despite some other prospects ranking higher, according to the recruiting services. It gives you an idea of how much Harding likes him, and Harding just had two offensive linemen selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft.
Beyond the O-line haul, Michigan football has a blue-chip QB commitment who is ranked No. 1, according to ESPN. Michigan has Tyson Robinson, a four-star running back, as well as two elite pass-catchers in wideout Quentin Burrell and tight end Colt Lumpris.
Michigan also has high-ranking four-star commitments at cornerback, safety, wide receiver, and defensive line. Whittingham has also gone to 10 different states, outside of Michigan, to land talent. That includes Ohio, but also Texas, Florida, Georgia, California, Utah, New Jersey, Mississippi, Illinois, and Indiana.
When Whittingham was hired, recruiting was the biggest question mark, outside of his age. Some wondered how he would do for a program that recruits nationally, as Michigan does. Whittingham has adapted. He has adapted to NIL and recruiting in the Midwest, landing four commitments from Michigan, two from Illiniois and Indiana, plus anoher from Ohio.
Whittingham has leveraged his ties to Utah when it makes sense, such as with four-star QB Kamden Lopati. He has also proven he can go head-to-head against other big-name programs with recruiting wins over Ohio State, Indiana, Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida, Washington, and others.
It's been an impressive haul, one that, along with the existing roster, sets up Michigan football very well for the future.
