Michigan football has been on a recruiting heater for weeks now. It reached a high point, for now, last weekend when the Wolverines pulled off the surprise flip of four-star tight end Colt Lumpris.
Lumpris is 6-foot-6, 249 pounds, out of New Jersey. He's ranked No. 289 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Michigan made a strong push for Lumpris, and there was hope that the Wolverines could flip him during official visit season, however, after a surprise visit, Kyle Whittingham was able to flip the dynamic tight end away from the Crimson Tide.
Michigan football fans were excited, rightfully so, but maybe not as excited as they should be to add the athletic pass-catcher to the roster.

Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider posted highlights of Lumpris from his Instagram account that show him playing lacrosse and basketball. As expected, he's a slam-dunk machine on the hardwood, which isn't that unusual for tight ends, who often play basketball.
Marich said in his post that the potential of Lumpris is "through the roof."
Michigan tight end flip has a good chance to out-play his ranking
Lumpris feels like a prospect who could develop from a four-star tight end into a day-two draft pick. He's got everything you'd want in a move tight end, and here's part of what his 247 Sports scouting report had to say:
"Should be viewed as an immensely high-ceiling pass catcher with an ideal blend of route-running savvy and contested catch ability. Could eventually draw looks from NFL scouts if he keeps progressing."
The Wolverines had dynamic pass-catchers in the 2025 and 2026 classes. Andrew Olesh (2025) was committed until Penn State flipped him. Michigan football also had Matt Ludwig signed until Sherrone Moore was fired. He asked out of his letter of intent.
So there's an opening on the roster for a pass-catching tight end with that kind of ability. Michigan has already upgraded the wide receivers in a major way, something that has continued in the 2027 class with the commitment of top-100 wideout Quentin Burrell.
That has continued at tight end. Lumpris should just be the start, but as far as the 2027 class, Lumpris should be a great building block for the future.
