The commitment of four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati is looking better and better for Michigan football.
Lopati has routinely been ranked among the top-10 quarterbacks in the 2027 class, but after a strong performance at the Elite 11, ESPN updated its rankings, moving the West Valley, Utah, quarterback to No. 1 among all signal-callers.
At 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, Lopati is ranked 36th overall by ESPN's rankings. He is ranked ahead of Trae Taylor, who is the top-ranked quarterback via 247 Sports, and Oregon QB commitment Will Mencl, the top-ranked quarterback via Rivals, which ranks Lopati 10th in its own rankings.
Michigan football QB commitment looks elite, who is now ranked No. 1 by ESPN
Some Michigan fans have expressed concern about the 2027 recruiting class or the future of the quarterback position, but with Lopati in the fold, it's in really good shape. Lopati is a consensus top-10 quarterback. Beyond that, he fits what Michigan wants to do perfectly.
It will be interesting to see how Bryce Underwood develops this season. With Underwood and Tommy Carr in the quarterback room, Lopati could have to wait his turn. This rankings update by ESPN makes you take notice, though. Lopati felt like a solid four-star prospect. It was hard to see him as the top-ranked quarterback in the class, but Michigan fans might be underrating him.
Regardless, if Michigan can get Underwood up to speed this season, then the Wolverines would have two decent options to eventually choose from: Carr and Lopati. That's a good place for the quarterback room to be in heading into Kyle Whittingham's first season.
The Wolverines have their starting quarterback, a quality backup in Carr, a notable veteran backup, and what could be the quarterback of the future in Lopati, assuming he signs on Early National Signing Day.
Some fans look down on the ESPN recruiting rankings for a reason, but they are part of the composite rankings and the Rivals Industry Rankings for a reason. There is usually more of a consensus around the top-ranked quarterback, but for Michigan football fans concerned about a lack of high-end talent in the 2027 class, this is one reason to feel better.
A solid QB room is the first requirement of building a playoff contender. It's hard to win without an elite player at that position and it looks like Kyle Whittingham has Michigan well-stocked into the future.
