Michigan football might not land the commitment of five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, but it certainly won't be due to a lack of effort.
The Wolverines hosted the No. 11 overall prospect in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, for an official visit to Ann Arbor and the 5-foot-11, 185-pound cornerback came away impressed with the Wolverines.
Described as one of the best man-to-man cornerbacks in the 2027 recruiting class, Dobson feels like he could be the next Will Johnson. He would be the crown jewel for Kyle Whittingham's first recruiting class, although Dakota Guerrant would be considered a crown jewel, too.
However, it feels like Michigan has momentum with Dobson, who visited Texas A&M the weekend before. Coming out of the official visit to Texas Station, there were some concern that Dobson would commit before he made his trip to Ann Arbor.
Obviously, that didn't happen. Dobson said going into this visit that Michigan was a serious contender. Coming out of the visit, after rolling out the "blue carpet" it feels like the Wolverines have drastically improved their chances.
The latest update on Josh Dobson is positive for Michigan football
“Man, it’s something special they are building, and they want me to be a part of it," Dobson told Steve Wiltfon of Rivals after his official visit to Ann Arbor.
Dobson also described the visit as "wonderful" according to the Wolverine.com.
It feels like this recruitment is down to Texas A&M and Michigan. Auburn got an official visit at the end of May. South Carolina is set to get one next weekend, but the Aggies are the heavy favorite via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine (88 percent), thanks to a slew of early predictions earlier this month, Wiltfong included.
Things can change in an instant, though. Dobson got to meet with some top boosters, and he already seemed sold on Kyle Whittingham as his head coach, just like the academics of Michigan seem to have his mom pretty high on the University of Michigan.
Beyond all that, Jay Hill is a secondary guru, sort of like Jesse Minter. The back end of the defense is going to thrive, which could include Dobson, who could be a cornerstone for the Wolverines, just like Will Johnson was.
Whittingham hasn't landed a five-star commit in Ann Arbor yet, but he has won some big-time recruiting battles. We will find out soon enough if the Wolverines can win another.
