Michigan football's recruiting momentum has carried over into June, thanks to yet another blue-chip commitment in the 2027 class for head coach Kyle Whittingham.
After picking up 11 commitments in May, the Wolverines have gone about a week without a commitment. That mini-drought (sarcasm) ended on Thursday night with the pledge of four-star cornerback Blake Jenkins.
This commitment started looking like a slam dunk on Wednesday. The Wolverines started getting expert projections for the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine after Jenkins announced a final five that included Michigan, SMU, Texas, Alabama, and Vanderbilt.
Houston was another team in the mix. The Cougars were scheduled to get an official visit, just like Vanderbilt and Texas. However, the Wolverines were able to win out, landing the No. 260 recruit overall in the 2027 class via the Rivals Industry Rankings on Thursday.
Michigan footnabll lands yet another blue-chipper
The 6-foot-190-pound cornerback is out of Katy, Texas. That's the same hometown as Andrew Marsh, so that could have been a factor in the Wolverines winning out.
Beyond that, Whittingham's staff has been stellar at closing. Michigan has closed out 12 commitments over the past two months, with two major commitments in April, too. There were others, but some of those early commitments have flipped.
Michigan has settled in on the recruiting trail. Jenkins is the 16th commitment in 2027 for Whittingham, which has Michigan ranked just outside the top 10 in the 2027 team rankings from 247 Sports.
The scouting report from 247 Sports calls Jenkins a "natural-man corner." His scouting report even says that he has the potential to be an "island technician."
That sounds like a promising addition, especially considering that Jay Hill's defense with BYU last season intercepted more passes than any other team in college football. Jenkins should easily fit into a defense that is going to value the ability to play man-to-man.
Jenkins had five interceptions in high school, the past two seasons, his sophomore and junior years. He also broke up five passes.
Michigan football has 16 commitments in the 2027 class. 12 of them are ranked as blue-chip prospects (75 percent) and U-M is ranked 16th via the 247 Sports team rankings.
The class is trending up. Michigan feels likely to land another commitment soon, as official visit season is just getting started. The Wolverines are shooting their shot with some five-star targets, too, and based on the way they have recruited this spring, don't rule anything out.
