The quiet surrounding the Michigan football program this season has been just what the Wolverines needed. After winning the national championship in 2024, the Wolverines have had anything but a quiet.

Sanctions from the NCAA, quiet rumblings of a cheating scandal that never was, too quiet to begin with, and the tumultuous ending to Sherrone Moore’s tenure as the Michigan football coach. What the Wolverines have had to endure has, in some ways, been beyond their control, and in other ways, has been of their own making.

In one word, what can a Wolverine football fan say to describe the past few years?

Disastrous.

So, during this 2025 off season, the lack of headlines and attention-grabbing ticking lines has been a welcome sight for any Wolverine fan. Is that the hiring of Kyle Whittingham? Is that his influence in short order? The answer may still be unknown, but the hiring of Whittingham will hopefully bring stability to a position that has lacked it for quite a while.

When Jim Harbaugh left and Moore replaced him, things on the field took a downward turn. The inconsistency at quarterback, the lackluster showing against top-rated opponents, and the head coach seemingly out of actual answers only led to a Michigan Wolverines team that was heavily dismissed in the national landscape. Then Sherrone Moore’s time in Michigan came to an end, due to off the field discretions and lack of good judgment. While that was the closing chapter in a book, any Wolverine fan would soon like to forget, the turn quickly had to be made to find the next leader in the locker room.

Kyle Whittingham is revered as being disciplined and with high integrity and character. His successful time at Utah, where he is the all-time leader in wins, is one thing that Michigan fans can hang their hat on. But what is most important is that Whittingham comes with a stabilization that the Michigan program so desperately needs.

Fans can only hope that with his arrival, Michigan football will be something that the college football world will take seriously once again. With the Big Ten, seemingly the strongest conference in the playoffs, the Wolverines must keep up with the top tier of the conference. Such a storied program cannot fall into the dwellings of the basement of the Big Ten; it diminishes the revere that the Michigan athletic department sees itself in.

Whittingham must not only rebuild a football team; he has to rebuild the character of it as well.

So, a quiet off season is a welcomed thing for the Michigan Wolverines. Anything but that and it would have been more of the same old stuff.

The same old stuff no longer works.
