Kyle Whittingham is building a stellar recruiting class in his first year as Michigan football head coach, but there is still work to do, especially if the Wolverines want to land one of the five-star targets still on their board.
One of those is five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who visited Texas A&M this weekend. As far as recruiting targets go, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound cornerback, has to be near the top of Michigan's board.
The Wolverines have landed some elite players so far in the 2027 class, including four-star defensive back Tavares Harrington, who is ranked No. 124 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
With teams like Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana dominating the Big Ten, having elite talent in the secondary is a must, which is why Dobson has been a top priority. Plus, as the ninth-ranked recruit in 2027, the talent is undeniable.
Dobson seems fully solid on Whittingham. Michigan has done a great job in the recruitment of the five-star cornerback, but it still feels like Texas A&M is the team to beat for the Cornelius, North Carolina prospect.
There was some thought that the Aggies could get Dobson to commit this weekend, even before his scheduled official visit to Ann Arbor on June 19th. However, according to Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine, Dobson hasn't committed, and that's not expected before his Michigan football visit.
That at least gives Michigan a chance. The Aggies are the favorite, according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, but with the way the Wolverines have been closing, it would be foolish to rule them out.
Another 5-star still on the board
Dakota Guerrant, the top-ranked recruit from Michigan in the 2027 class, is the other five-star the Wolverines are pursuing, at least in this class.
Guerrant, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound wideout who would be a game-changer for Michigan football, took his official visit to Oregon this weekend, and one Rivals insider suggested a commitment could happen.
Guerrant's visit has come and gone. A commitment could still be forthcoming, but there hasn't been a new wave of predictions, so Michigan will at least have the opportunity to bring him on campus for his official visit, which is also scheduled for June 19th.
Michigan has been behind the 8-ball in this recruitment. The biggest obstacle might be his skepticism about the offense. That's going to be difficult to overcome. A decision was expected in July, and it seems like he will be sticking to the timeline, which is a good thing for the Wolverines.
