Michigan football is in the mix for two elite cornerbacks in the 2027 recruiting class, but it looks like one of them might be headed to Ohio State.

That's four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert.

The 5-foot-10, 173-pounder was formerly committed to Indiana. Since that decommitment, Michigan and Ohio State became the frontrunners.

The Buckeyes hosted Torbert, who is from Cincinnati, for an official visit this weekend, before he is expected to visit Michigan football this weekend.

However, you get the feeling that a visit to Ann Arbor might not happen. Torbert has been trending with expert projections since visiting Columbus. If he does still make it to Ann Arbor, Michigan will have a chance to turn things around, but Steve Wiltfong and two other Rivals recruiting experts have projected Torbert to Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes a 96 percent chance to land his commitment.

When this turned into a Michigan-Ohio State recruiting battle, it felt like the Buckeyes were going to be hard to beat. The Wolverines haven't won many head-to-head recruiting battles in the state of Ohio over the years. It used to happen a lot more frequently.

The four-game winning streak didn't even help that much. Michigan was able to land Jordan Marshall in the 2024 class. He's one of the best running backs in the country, but there haven't been many other pellets on the wall in Ohio, at least when both teams have offered.

Michigan still has five-star option on the board at cornerback

On the flip side, this might not be terrible news for Michigan football. The Wolverines just hosted five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback out of Cornelius, North Carolina.

Dobson came away impressed with his official visit to Ann Arbor. Even Floyd 'Money' Mayweather was recruiting the five-star cornerback to Michigan. Texas A&M and South Carolina are serious threats. There haven't been any projections for the Wolverines but that could be their saving grace.

Cornerback also isn't as big a need as, say, linebacker in the 2027 class. The Wolverines have four-star defensive back Tavarres Harrington, as well as four-star Darius Johnson. It would be great to get Dobson in the class. He would feel like the cherry on top with other four-star recruits also trending to Michigan in Lincoln Mageo (OL) and Ifeanyi Emedobi (EDGE).

Kyle Whittingham's first class has fallen out of the top 10 of the 247 Sports composite team rankings, but with a few commitments, the Wolverines could be back right in the top 10, although Torbert feels like he is headed to Ohio State.
