Michigan, Kyle Whittingham about to go on a major heater on recruiting trail

It looks like the month of May is going to be very good to Kyle Whittingham and the Michigan football program.

The Wolverines have already landed a major commitment this month, landing four-star offensive tackle Jakari Lipsey, the No. 3 in-state recruit in the 2027 class, who ranks 105th overall.

That was just the start. Momentum has been building with some other prospects. Quentin Burrell has been a top priority, especially for the new Michigan football coaching staff. Notre Dame was the clear favorite at one time, but Whittingham's staff has closed the gap and overtaken the Fighting Irish, at least according to recent predictions.

Now, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound wideout who is ranked in the top 100 overall, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, is projected to commit to Michigan football later this week. It was reported on Monday that Burrell will announce his commitment on Wednesday.

That should be a great day to be a Michigan Wolverine. Yet, the good times should keep rolling for Michigan, especially after some new expert projections came in late Monday for another priority target.

More blue-chip commitments are coming for Michigan football

Tavares Harrington is another top target. He's a 6-foot-3, 175-pound defensive back who is ranked No. 124 overall, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. Like Burrell, Harrington is right out of Notre Dame's backyard (Chicago).

The Fighting Irish seemed to have a strong foothold with Harrington, who just released a top five, but is now setting a commitment date for later this month (May 22). Steve Wiltfong and other national recruiting experts for Rivals logged some expert projections, giving the Wolverines a 90-percent chance to win his commitment, according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Michigan has a 92 percent chance with Burrell, who will be announcing on Wednesday. Each of those commitments would be massive in their own right, but for Whittigham to go into Chicago, in his first full recruiting class, and beat Notre Dame head-to-head would be impressive.

Michigan still has to do it. Predictions aren't commitments. But that would give the 2027 class, currently ranked 30th, with seven commitments total, a jumpstart.

Another commitment could be on the horizon, too. The Wolverines have also been trending as the favorite for Mississippi four-star running back Tyson Robinson. The 5-foot-9, 195-pounder from SEC country is ranked No. 210 overall in the 2027 class. He's expected to announce his commitment on May 16.

Alabama, Ole Miss, and Tennessee are among the other top contenders, so this would be another solid recruiting win for Whittingham. Tony Alford has been the driving force. The Michigan running backs coach continues to be one of the Wolverines' best recruiters.

Whittingham now picked up three blue-chip commitments in the 2027 class, including a quarterback Michigan football flipped from Illinois. There was one decommitment, but if all of these predictions come true, that will be six blue-chip commitments in a little over a month, with five ranking in the top 210 overall.

That answers the question about whether or not Kyle Whittingham can recruit.
