Michigan football would recruit players in Utah from time to time under previous head coaches, but the activity out West has picked up in a real way.
That's only going to continue. It already has in the 2028 class. Four-star quarterback Kadem Lopati is from Utah and is one of the Wolverines' key commitments.
Another 2027 recruit, three-star tight end Christian Hanshaw, is on campus in Ann Arbor for an official visit. He's one of eight uncommitted recruits on campus for visits.
It also seems like he will be committing to Michigan football soon, if you read the tea leaves.
Michigan football is on commitment watch
Michigan GM Dave Peloquin posted on X, "Bleed Blue," which is essentially teasing a commitment. It's hard to tell who it's going to be based on that post. However, tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham said it was a "great day to be a Michigan man" in another post.

That's a pretty big hint that Hanshaw, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound tight end out of American Fork, Utah, has committed to the Wolverines 2027 recruiting class.
If accurate, that would be Michigan's 18th commitment in the 2027 class. Hanshaw is a multi-spot athlete who also plays basketball. He's an impressive athlete who can play in-line or in the slot. He doesn't have great vertical speed, but feels like more of an old-school tight end.
Ranked as the No. 516 recruit overall in the 2027 class, as well as the 28th-best tight end, and the fifth-best player in the state of Utah, Hanshaw is a solid all-around prospect. He might not have elite speed or explosiveness, but he can work on those things. He catches the football naturally and looks like a willing blocker who also played defense in 2024.
Freddie Whittingham has been recruiting Hanshaw since he was with the Utes. He was the primary recruiter for Utah before extending an offer for Michigan. Utah, BYU, and UCLA were among the top contenders, but the recent official visit seems to have locked down a commitment for the Wolverines.
Hanshaw will pair nicely with four-star tight end Colt Lumpris, who has the upside to be a pass-catching machine. It's easy to see them playing together. These commitments usually come quickly, so don't be surprised if Hanshaw commits to the Michigan football program sooner rather than later.
It shouldn't be the last commitment to come out of this weekend either.
