One of the biggest issues last season for Michigan football was poor special teams play.
That was rectified, even before Sherrone Moore was fired, when he hired former Ohio State assistant coach Kerry Coombs, a one-time defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes,
However, Coombs has been charged with turning around the Wolverines special teams, which were atrocious the past two seasons.
Michigan's Kerry Coombs lands elite kicker for the future
One way to fix things is by adding elite talent. Special teams are sometimes overlooked, and while Michigan football fans were focused on Victors Weekend from a 2027 perspective, with eight uncommitted recruits on campus, the commitment on Saturday was in the 2028 class, from the top-ranked kicker Ryan Jung.
Jung announced his commitment via a post from Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider. He said it was his dream to play for Michigan football, and that dream will come true at the Big House.

"When I first moved to America, I was looking at football stadiums, and when I saw the Big House, I was like, 'yeah, I want to go there,'" Jung told The Michigan Insider. "As soon as I saw the crowd and the atmosphere… my friend showed me a documentary… I was like, 'yeah, that's where I want to play football.'"
Jung said that the visit still exceeded his expectations. Coombs was one of the reasons for that.
"It turned out to be way more (than I expected)," Jung said, "I loved everything about the facilities. It was my first time touring and seeing the facilities. The weight room was amazing. I loved the indoor facility and the outdoor facility, and especially, I love the coaches. I love the history of the kickers at Michigan, and I loved Coach (Kerry) Coombs and Coach (Garrett) Clawson."
Michigan fans know how important a strong kicker can be. Jake Moody was essential during the Wolverines' run in 2021-2022. Jake Turner also made some critical field goals for the Wolverines against Ohio State and in the national title game in 2023.
Dominic Zvada also made the game-winner in the Michigan football upset over Ohio State in 2024. He also made a 56-yard field goal in that game that helped turn the tide.
Jung played for IMG last season, making 4/5 field goals with a 45-yarder as his long. He told the Michigan Insider he has the range to make a 65-yard field goal in a game.
