Michigan football landed its first commitment in the 2028 class on Saturday. It was a bit of a surprise as the Wolverines landed a five-star kicker, Ryan Jung.

The rising junior in high school kicked at the IMG Academy last season. Most importantly, it's a sign that Michigan football recruiting will start to focus more on the 2028 class.

There are some important 2027 official visitors on campus, eight in all, who have not yet committed anywhere. So there is a chance for Kyle Whittingham to add to his 2027 class this weekend, with some blue-chip targets on the board, too.

Looking ahead to 2028, though, Michigan football had another important visitor on campus, 2028 four-star EDGE Major Stokes.

Michigan setting the pace with 4-star EDGE from Utah Major Stokes

Whittingham will have an edge here, it seems, landing the blue-chip EDGE, because Stokes is from the state of Utah (Orem). The former Utah head coach also offered the 6-foot-5, 240-pound pass rusher back in February of 2025. Soon after Whittingham was hired in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines extended an offer of their own back in January.

Teams have been offering left and right since then, including Notre Dame earlier this week. Michigan football was fortunate to have Stokes on campus for a multi-day visit. He was even able to connect with former Utah EDGE John Henry Daley, who is now a Michigan Wolverine.

Since April, the recruitment of Stokes has blown up. Nebraska, Missouri, and UCLA all joined the mix with offers that month, followed by Oregon, Miami, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M, USC, SMU, and previously, Texas Tech, BYU, and others joined the mix.

Stokes is turning into a national recruit. Ranked 74th overall in the 2028 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, he is also 11th among EDGE players. The production on that field backs that up as the blue-chip was a force to be reckoned with.

In 2025, Stokes was credited with 42 tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks. He basically lived in the other team's backfield. He also had 3.5 sacks as a freshman back in 2024. That was in addition to 60 total tackles and 11 tackles for loss.

Stokes didn't just take the usual unofficial visit that's a one-day thing, because he has been making the camp tour, too. He was in Ann Arbor for a multi-day visit, according to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider,

It''s early, but the Wolverines already feel like they are in a good spot here.
