When Kyle Whittingham was hired as the Michigan football head coach, there were plenty of questions about his ability to recruit at a school like Michigan.
Whittingham did a stellar job at Utah, but he had never had to recruit at a high level like you need to at a place like Michigan, at least if you want to beat the Ohio State's of the world. Michigan might never have more talent than the Buckeyes or Oregon Ducks, but the Wolveriens need to be close.
That means landing blue-chip talent. In the 2027 recruiting class, the Wolverines have done exactly that, landing 14 blue-chip commitments out of 20 total, with another looming in just a few days.
Michigan football expected to land another blue-chip commitment
Four-star offensive lineman Lincoln Mageo has been one of Michigan's top targets in the 2027 class since Whittingham first took over. Offensive line coach Jim Harding has been pushing hard for the interior offensive line target
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound tackle is ranked No. 369 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Washington and Utah are the other teams in the mix. The Utes appeared to grab the momentum on their official visit, but Michigan has been the most consistent presence.
Mageo will announce a commitment on July 11th. The Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine has Michigan pegged as the favorite, giving the Wolverines a 91 percent chance to land the offernsive lineman's commitment.
If Mageo does choose the Wolverines, it will complete an impressive offensive line haul for Harding, who also landed Jakari Lipsey (4-star), Sidney Rouleau (4-star), and Louis Epsosito, who just reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan not long ago, shutting down his recruitment.
Michigan is ranked just outside the top 10 of the 247 Sports composite team rankings. The Wolverines are 11th right now. The class should finish solidly in the top 15, with a projected blue-chip percentage of 75 percent.
That's solid work. Michigan even has the top-ranked quarterback prospect via ESPN, as well as a near-five-star offensive tackle in Lipsey, via 247 Sports, as well as guys who are around the top-100 in Monsanna Torbert, Xavier Muhammad, Tavares Harrington, and Quentin Burrell,
Michigan also has Recarder Kitchen still committed. He gives the Wolverines seven of the top 156 with commitments at QB, WR, CB, DB, OL, DL, and EDGE. This is already a stellar class. Mageo would only add to what was a really solid haul, especially in the trenches.
