When Michigan moved on from Sherrone Moore in December, it was a wonder who would be brought in that could live up to the Michigan standard. When it was announced that it would be former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, there was a buzz about what he would be able to do with the resources the Wolverines have to offer.
Whittingham has been known as an excellent recruiter who is able to find diamonds in the rough to develop into great players. Even with limited resources at Utah, Whittingham was able to build a consistent winning program, and now he has the chance to do the same at Michigan. He has started strong in Ann Arbor with a Top 10 recruiting class by the standards of Rivals Team Recruiting rankings, clocking in at No. 10.

This is a big boost for Michigan, which just last week was in the 20s, but a few key commitments, like four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr., who crossed state lines from Ohio, have the Wolverines shooting up the rankings.
One of the most impressive things about Michigan's ranking from Rivals is that the Wolverines do not have a single consensus five-star recruit in the Class of 2027. The class is composed of 20 recruits, 14 four-star recruits, and six three-star recruits. The Wolverines are the only top 10 team without a five-star commitment.
Kyle Whittingham's lack of five-star talent shouldn't define this offseason
Of course, everyone wants five-star recruits, and Michigan was high on the lists of a few; however, Whittingham wasn't able to close the deal. While Whittingham has the track record of being a great head coach and elite recruiter, Michigan's track record as of late has not been the best.
Since winning the National Championship in 2023, Michigan has only had one recruiting class ranked in the Rivals Top 10. Former head coach Jim Harbaugh was an amazing recruiter, but Moore dropped the ball when he took over, resulting in two disappointing seasons. Whittingham has some work to do to get the program back to the Michigan standard.
So, for Whititngham to already have a top 10 recruiting class, even if it is only No. 10, is huge for the Wolverines. It is the perfect first stepping stone for Whittingham to have a successful career at Michigan. If the Wolverines can perform better this season than they have in the last two, it could signal the change that Michigan is moving in the right direction.
There are still a few 2027 recruits left to commit, and Michigan is in the mix, the biggest one being Lincoln Mageo, who feels like a lock for the Wolverines. So, while Whittingham has faced some losses along the way, there could still be a few wins in the mix for Michigan, and potentially a better recruiting ranking.
