Michigan football was hoping to come away with elite commitments from two different 2027 cornerback recruits on Wednesday, but in the end, the Wolverines had to settle for just one.
Five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson was one of the cornerbacks who announced a decision on Thursday. The other was four-star Monsanna Torbert.
Tobert announced his commitment to Michigan football about an hour before Dobson made his decision to commit to South Carolina public shortly after 6 PM EST on the Rivals YouTube Channel.
Michigan did a great job in Dobson's recruitment. The Wolverines went from not being in the mix to finishing in the top two for the Cornelius, North Carolina, product. He's 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, and ranked No. 12 overall via the Rivals Industry Rankings for 2027.
South Carolina hosted Dobson for the last official visit and the Gamecocks pulled out all the stops to land the five-star talent from neighboring North Carolina. It's a bit of a surprise. It felt like Texas A&M was the team to beat, but this is the second time in a week that the Aggies missed out on a five-star recruit after leading for an extended period of time.
Make of that what you will. It feels like South Carolina was probably the team willing to outbid others. Many of these recruitments come down to that. Michigan surely had a great offer on the table. Kyle Whittingham built a great relationship, too, but Shane Beamer had a longer one. That probably made a difference in South Carolina's favor, too.
Michigan has perfect consolation prize after missing on 5-star recruit
The good news is that Michigan didn't come away empty-handed. The Wolverines beat out Ohio State to land the commitment of Torbert, who is ranked 97th overall out of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Torbert is just under 5-foot-11. If he were 6-foot-1 like Dobson, he would probably be in the five-star range, too. Torbert is an exceptional athlete, though. He had over 2,000 total yards as a starting quarterback last season, in addition to 40 tackles, three interceptions, and three pass breakups.
Ohio State was the leader come out of his official visit, but the Wolverines pulled ahead during Victors Weekend and were able to close in one of Kyle Whittingham's biggest commitments in the 2027 class.
The Wolverines now have three four-star cornerback commitments, plus four-star safety/cornerback Tavares Harrington, and three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr.
Michigan has a top-10 recruiting class in 2027, according to the 247 Sports team composite rankings.
