Michigan football fans were already excited about the commitment of four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert for good reason.
Tobert is ranked no. 106 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as the 13th-best cornerback in the 2027 class. Ranked also as the fifth-best recruit out of Ohio, from Cincinnati, Michigan beat Ohio State head-to-head to land Torbert, which made his commitment even sweeter.
The Wolverines haven't won many head-to-head recruitments against Ohio State in recent years, despite a run of four consecutive victories. If Jim Harbaugh had never left for the NFL, Michigan football might have been able to capitalize more on the recruiting trail, although Sherrone Moore signed two quality classes. U-M was also slow to adapt to NIL.
Either way, Kyle Whittingham went into Ohio during his first recruiting class at Michigan and landed a major commitment, the biggest from that state since Jordan Marshall. Rod Moore was a really good get, too. We said it at the time, but the Buckeyes never offered him.
That wasn't the case here. So Michigan fans were right to be pumped. However, if you listen to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider, when it comes to his player comparison for Torbert, you will be over-the-moon excited (if you're a Michigan fan).
Another reason for Michigan football fans to get hyped about Monsanna Torbert
Might just be me, but #Michigan four-star DB commit Monsanna Torbert Jr. and his game kinda of reminds me of another do-it-all superstar... LSU great Tyrann Mathieu.

Torbert is a player who can impact the game at a number of spots on the football field, just like Mathieu. pic.twitter.com/LvH9lDLVD3

The 5-foot-10.5, 175-pound cornerback also plays quarterback for his high school team. He accumulated over 2,000 total yards last season, in addition to 40 tackles, three interceptions, and three pass breakups on defense.
Some have brought up the name of former Michigan football superstar Jabrill Peppers, a former Heisman finalist for the Wolverines, who played offense, defense, and special teams. Torbert could be that kind of player. He's certainly someone who can do things with the ball in his hands, even though his primary position will be cornerback.
With his size, Torbert could end up playing in the slot, a la Charles Woodson with the Packers, or Peppers for some of his time at Michigan. Either way, his impact could go well beyond defense, or his recruiting ranking for that matter.
