Michigan football has been on fire on the recruiting trail lately, and that hot streak continued on Friday night with the commitment of four-star defensive back Tavares Harrington.

A month or two ago, it didn't seem like Michigan football was destined to land Harrington's commitment. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound defensive back from the Chicago area seemed like a Notre Dame lean at the time.

However, Michigan has been surging, and a spring visit helped it seize the momentum with Harrington, who is also coming back to Ann Arbor for an official visit this summer.

After recently including the Wolverines in his top five, Harrington picked Michigan, as expected over Alabama and the Fighting Irish live on the Rivals YouTube channel.

Michigan football adds another blue-chip to the secondary

The work Michigan has done in the secondary in this class has been impressive. In just the past week, the Wolverines have landed three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr., four-star cornerback Darius Johnson, and now Harrington, who could be the perfect nickel. Here's an excerpt of Harrington's scouting report from 247 Sports.

"Should be viewed as a taller zone cornerback with multi-year starter upside that could offer some safety flex given how he tackles and tracks the football. Anticipates throws and drives to the catch point, usually arriving on schedule."

What's great about the Chicago prospect is that he can play both positions. He had 15 pass breakups as a sophomore, followed by nine more as a junior, to go along with three interceptions. The seventh-ranked recruit from the state of Illinois also had 89 tackles the past two seasons.

Alabama and Notre Dame were each expected to get official visits for the blue-chip prospect, yet Michigan won out, as it has with a number of other contested recruitments lately.

The Wolverines have 14 commitments total. Harrington is the 10th blue-chipper. He is the sixth that ranks in the top 125 overall. Michigan has two ranked in the top 100, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Harrington is also the ninth commitment in May as Michigan has surged into the top 15 of the 2027 team rankings. There are still some major targets on the board, such as five-star Joshua Dobson and wide receiver Dakota Guerrant.

It remains to be seen who will be next for Michigan, but Harrington is another massive get for the class, one who should end up starting for multiple seasons under Kyle Whittimgham.
