Nobody is on a recruiting heater quite like Michigan football.
On Thursday, following the commitment of in-state recruit Lundon Hampton, a three-star prospect from Grand Rapids, the Wolverines have now landed eight commitments in the month of May.
Hampton, who is expected to play on the offensive side of the ball, is the sixth commitment in the past eight days for Michigan, as well as the second from the state of Michigan.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound athlete projects to running back for Michigan. Tony Alford teased a commitment earlier on Thursday, along with QB coach Koy Detmer Jr.
Michigan's latest commitment, Lundon Hampton, is better than ranking suggests
Despite being ranked No. 1,017 overall via the 247 Sports composite rankings, Hampton rushed for 1,266 yards last season, in addition to 588 yards as a receiver. Michigan football has a lot of talent in the backfield, but it doesn't have a back that is that accomplished as a pass catcher.
Michigan defeated Michigan State, mostly head-to-head, for this commitment. The Wolverines and Spartans were each expected to get official visits. Penn State, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan State, Boston College, Cal, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati also offered.
The offer list shows that Hampton might be a little underrated. He's been highly productive in high school and has some solid track times, like a 23.19 in the 200 as a sophomore. A lack of top-end speed probably held down his ranking a little. His highlights are electrifying, though.
Hampton is the second running back commit for Michigan football in the 2027 class, following the commitment of four-star running back Tyson Robinson. The 5-foot-9, 199-pound back is ranked No. 224 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Robinson and Hampton complement each other well. Robinson was a big-time pickup from SEC country, with teams like Alabama pushing for his commitment. Tony Alford won out there, and also picked up a nice in-state commitment from a kid who has a chance to out-play his ranking.
It's easy to say that, but Hampton really is dynamic with the ball in his hands. He should be a great fit in the new offense run by Jason Beck, and the bonus is keeping him away from Michigan State.
In the big picture, Michigan has 13 commitments. Nine of them are ranked as blue-chip recruits (4-stars or higher) with another expected on Thursday in four-star defensive back Tavares Harrington, a one-time Notre Dame lean, who has been trending to the Wolverines.
In other words, the recruiting heater should continue.
