Michigan's next recruiting push should have Michigan State fans terrified

Michigan State is the favorite to land an elite in-state recruit, but Michigan football is making a strong push to change that.

Michigan football's streak of four consecutive days with a commitment might come to a close on Sunday, although you never know with the way the Wolverines have been recruiting, but that doesn't mean there is a lack of positive buzz. Far from it.

The latest is that Michigan is making a push to land the commitment of elite in-state prospect, Gideon Gash, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound wide receiver/athlete, who is ranked 70th overall in the 2027 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Out of Catholic Central in Novi, Michigan, the Wolverines faded in this recruitment a little after the coaching change, but Kyle Whittingham's team has re-emerged as a "legitimate contender," according to Josh Henschke of The Maize and Blue Review.

Henschke posted that on X because Gideon made a surprise visit to Michigan football on Saturday, turning some heads as the Wolverines haven't been a huge factor in this recruitment as of late.

That changed recently as Michigan has moved quickly into the category of contender for the second-ranked recruit in the state.

Michigan football trying to reverse Michigan State trend

Gash started trending to Michigan State back in February. Even well-known national recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong forecasted the in-state standout to MSU.

However, the recruitment has shifted since then. Michigan football hosted him for a visit on Saturday. Alabama also hosted Gideon twice recently and is scheduled for an official visit, along with Oklahoma and Texas Tech.

Michigan State doesn't have an official visit scheduled. Michigan doesn't either. Those could be coming, but it seems that the Spartans grip on this recruitment has loosened.

Michigan wasn't really viewed as a contender until this visit. The Wolverines must have been doing work in the background in order to secure that.

Gash is listed as a wide receiver, but could also be a defensive back. He had nine pass breakups and an interception last season, in addition to catching 19 passes for 540 yards.

That's a program kid right there. Get him in the program and figure out the position later. He's been clocked at 4.35 in the 40-meter dash. His brother plays for Michigan State, so the Spartans have that going for them. They also have a 94 percent chance to land his commitment, according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.

It's safe to call the Spartans the leader for now, but with Michigan's recent string of recruiting success, that could change quickly.
