It almost feels silly that some Michigan football fans worried about the ability of head coach Kyle Whittingham to recruit.
Despite being hired at the worst time, after one of the worst situations, Whittingham has done a masterful job of keeping the Michigan football program together.
It was critical in those first few weeks after he was hired. Whittingham kept the roster intact and built a championship-level coaching staff, at least from the outside looking in.
Whittingham was everything Michigan needed, even before Sherrone Moore got fired. But there were questions about his ability to land an elite recruiting class, questions Whittingham is answering in short order.
On Thursday night, Michigan football landed its 16th commitment of the 2027 class, thanks to the pledge of four-star cornerback Blake Jenkins, a 6-foot-1 cornerback who should be perfect in Jay Hill's defensive scheme, which is more like Jesse Minter's than Wink Martindale's (thank goodness).
Jenkins joins Darius Johnson and Tavares Harrington as four-star cornerback commitments in this class, along with three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr, who certainly doesn't look like a three-star recruit. The Michigan football staff sent the entire defensive staff to visit him to help shore up his commitment.
Blue-chip talent is important. Developing that talent and supplementing it with the right guys in the transfer portal is important, too. It's hard to win unless you can get good players in the portal.
This Michigan recruiting class is exactly what Michigan football fans should want, though. It has 16 commitments at this point, and 12 of them are blue-chip recruits, four stars or higher.
The Wolverines don't have any five-star commitments in the class, although they are trying hard to make that happen, but six of those commitments in the class are ranked in the top 125 of the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Their positions are wide receiver, defensive line, EDGE, offensive tackle, quarterback, and cornerback. You can't build a roster much better than that, at least in terms of having the top-six players committed all at premium positions.
Michigan has nine total in the top 300. Those players include a four-star running back, a high upside tight end, and the newest commitment, who fits perfectly in the Wolverines new defense.
The Wolverines could add some high-end talent. Five stars at wide receiver and cornerbackuphill bs are on the board, but as far as elite recruiting classes, this is what it looks like.
