Michigan football's 2027 recruiting class is looking better by the day. On Saturday, it got better on the defensive line after the commitment of a four-star EDGE.
Jayce Brewer, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound EDGE out of Indianapolis, is ranked No. 324 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Brewer committed to Michigan football after a recruitment that included an impressive group of teams offering. Ohio State and Notre Dame each offered. Defending national champion Indiana was one of the teams that got an official visit. Purdue and Tennessee were among the others in the mix for the No. 8 player in the state of Indiana.
Another impressive recruiting win for Kyle Whittingham
Yet, a trio of visits to Ann Arbor over the spring shut the door on this recruitment for Michigan. Kyle Whittingham's staff locked down one of the top defensive linemen in the Midwest. He's got 5.5 sacks over the past two seasons, but he also played a lot of five technique in a three-man front, via his 247 Sports scouting report.
It's always possible that he grows into more of an interior player who has some pass-rush ability. Or, he could be a big EDGE. In a post that was teasing the commitment earlier on Saturday, defensive tackle coach Larry Black said, "a high-level cat" of the player committing. We suspected it was Brewer. He proved us right.
The Wolverines have seven commitments now in the 2027 class. Five of those have come under Whittingham, and four of those are four-star recruits, Brewer included. Michigan football is ranked 30th overall via 247 Sports, but the Wolverines' ranking is trending up, just like their recruiting.
