Confidence in fading in Michigan's ability to land 5-star Joshua Dobson

Some experts are doubting that Michigan football is going to land five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson.

The most important recruiting target is still on the board for Michigan football in the 2027 class is set to commit on Wednesday,

That's five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder out of Cornelius, North Carolina. A decision is expected on July 1st, with Michigan, Texas A&M, and South Carolina as the finalists.

All three programs hosted Dobson for official visits in June. South Carolina had him on campus for the last official visit, with Michigan and A&M taking their turns before that.

Dobson was projected to the Aggies by Steve Wiltfong of Rivals, and others coming of that official visit to College Station, and it doesn't feel like anything has changed since then.

Michigan football has improved its standing. Kyle Whittignham has a great relationship with Dobson. All of that helps. But that might not be enough to overcome Texas A&M, which is still the heavy favorite via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Texas A&M leading for five-star recruit Joshua Dobson

Texas A&M has an 86 percent chance to land Dobson on Monday, via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine. South Carolina is second, but Steve Wiltfong of Rivals posted on Monday that Michigan was "rising fast."

The Aggies were expected to land Albert Simien last week, until Notre Dame stole away his commitment very late. That's a reminder that anything can happen on the recruiting trail. That's one reason Michigan fans should still have hope.

Brice Marich, a recruiting expert for The Michigan Insider, posted on X that he "wasn't feeling super optimistic for (five-star) Joshua Dobson, but Michigan is still fighting."

Kyle Whittingham and the Wolverines haven't thrown in the towel yet. They also haven't done that with five-star wide receiver Dakota Guerrant. I wouldn't expect them to relent on Dobson either, at least until Signing Day.

Blake Jenkins and Darius Johnson at least give Michigan two four-star cornerback commitments in the 2027 class. Tavarres Harrington is a four-star CB/S safety, so shooting for a truly elite man corner makes sense. Think Will Johnson.

However, if Michigan is going to knock off Texas A&M, it needs to seize the momentum quickly. It felt like the Wolverines had it after his official visit, but they weren't able to maintain it.

Michigan has pulled out some surprise recruiting wins this cycle, so you never know. But it feels like things are trending away from the Wolverines with Dobson, the top target left in the 2027 class.
