Next 2027 blue-chip commitment for Michigan could come sooner than expected

Michigan football could be landing another blue-chip commitment sooner than expected after another recent trend for a 2027 target.

Michigan's commitment streak ended on Sunday, stopping a streak of four consecutive days with a commitment for the Wolverines.

However, that doesn't mean Michigan football fans will have to wait a long time for the next commitment.

There is one expected this week. Four-star defensive back Tavares Harrington, a 6-foot-3, cornerback/safety out of Chicago, is announcing on May 22nd. He's been trendinng hard with expert projections to the Wolverines.

Yet, there's a chance another commitment could come before that, at least if recent trends continue.

Over the weekend, it became clear that Michigan football was making a move in the recruitment of four-star cornerback Darius Johnson out of California. The 6-foot-1 cornerback, who is ranked No. 311 overall in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, visited Michigan on an unoffical visit back in March.

The Wolverines are scheduled to get an official visit in June, but Adam Gorney, Greg Biggins, and Michigan recruiting expert Ethan McDowell all put in projections for the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine for Johnson to land with the Wolverines.

Cal and UCLA are the top contenders for his commitment. But it appears the Wolverines have taken the lead. California was a fertile recruiting ground for Kyle Whittingham when he was the Utah head coach, so it's not surprising to see the Wolverines target more players in that area.

Michigan football's recruiting hot streak projected to continue

Michigan has always recruited California. So it's a natural fit with all of the West Coast ties on the coaching staff. The Wolverines have 11 commitments total in the 2027 class. Eight of them are ranked as blue-chip prospects (4-star or higher), while two are in the top 100 overall, and five are ranked within the top 122, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

If Michigan were able to land Harrington and Johnson, that would give the Wolverines four total commitments in the secondary. Maxwell Miles committed back in March. Charles Woodson Jr. pledged to Kyle Whittingham last Friday, although it's hard to believe he's a three-star after watching him on film.

Michigan is ranked 19th in the team rankings. It feels like at least two more commitments are on the horizon, which would give them 10 blue-chip prospects before June hits. Considering Whittingham's late start due to the coaching change, that's impressive.

Michigan is still big-game hunting, too. The Wolverines have been trending up with a pair of five-star targets, so it feels like the Michigan football recruiting buzz isn't dying down anytime soon.

There is no timetable for a commitment, but recently, when Michigan has started trending for a prospect, an announcement comes soon after. So keep an eye out, the Wolverines could be on commit watch again.

The latest post from Michigan DC Jay Hill is a sign that the Wolverines are indeed on commit watch.
