Even though the focus has been on Dusty May and the NBA draft the past two days, Michigan football fans still have plenty of reasons to be excited about the work that Kyle Whittingham is doing on the recruiting trail.
The first-year Michigan football head coach has put together a class with 18 commitments, as well as 13 blue-chip commitments overall.
Following the final official visit before the dead period, which lasts until September, Michigan football has momentum with a few 2027 targets still on the board. One of them is from Ohio. That's four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert. He was projected by multiple experts to the Wolverines after the visit, and now, another blue-chip defender is trending to commit to Michigan football.
That's four-star linebacker Fredderick Ford, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound linebacker from Greenwood, Mississippi. The Wolverines have been battling Mississippi State and Ole Miss from the talented linebacker, but it feels like Michigan football has pulled ahead, hopefully for good.
Multiple recruiting experts for Rivals have projected the blue-chip defender to the Wolverines, which gives them an 88 percent chance to get his commitment, according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.
New 4-star trend is huge for Michigan football
Frederrick Ford would be a huge commitment for Michigan. The Wolverines have one three-star linebacker committed in the 2027 class. That's after not signing any blue-chip recruits at the position in the last class, although there are some guys with decent upside.
Tennessee and Florida State were also in the mix for Ford, who is ranked No. 224 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's No. 192 in the Top247.
Cain Brackey, a former UCLA commit, was on campus last weekend, too. Indiana landed his commitment earlier this week. Some might have seen that as a negative, but it might have been a sign that the Wolverines were about to close with Ford.
A decision is expected in the near future. Ford could be Michigan football's next commitment in the 2027 class. Four-star offensive lineman Lincoln Mageo is expected to decide on July 11th. Five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson has a decision date set for July 1st. So there are some other commitments on the horizon.
Landing a blue-chip prospect at a key position of need, out of SEC country, would be a nice win for Alex Whittingham, too, who has struggled a bit on the recruiting trail in his first class. The Wolverines don't get into Mississippi often for recruits, but Ford feels like he's poised to wear the Maize and Blue.
