Michigan football just wrapped up its annual Victors Weekend recruiting event, and it appears to have been a smashing success. The Wolverines received a commitment from tight end Christian Hanshaw, and they've received multiple predictions to land another top target, this time in a battle against their arch-rival.

On Sunday evening, Rivals reporters Allen Trieu and Ethan McDowell put in predictions for Michigan to land cornerback Monsanna Torbert out of Cincinnati. Torbert is the 10th-ranked cornerback in the nation and the No. 70 recruit per Rivals.

A significant development for Michigan football recruiting

This is a very significant development in multiple ways. First off, Michigan would be defeating Ohio State in a head-to-head battle for an elite player. Torbert was at the top of Ohio State's recruiting list, and there was buzz about him potentially cancelling his Michigan visit and committing to the Buckeyes following his visit last week. OSU felt really good about where they stood. Flipping the script like that would be a massive testament to this coaching staff.

Second, this softens the blow of potentially missing on Joshua Dobson. The five-star cornerback is planning a July commitment, and while Michigan has done a fantastic job in his recruitment, they're still neck and neck with Texas A&M and South Carolina. Both South Carolina and Texas A&M are likely to be very aggressive with NIL, and Texas A&M may be extra desperate after their top cornerback target, John Meredith, committed to Texas.

I don't think the Torbert and Dobson recruitments are linked at all; Michigan wasn't going to take only one of the two. The Wolverines badly want both and will continue their hot pursuit of Dobson. But even if Dobson committed elsewhere, landing Torbert would give the Wolverines a fantastic defensive back haul.

Torbert is set to announce his commitment on July 1st. Obviously, a lot can happen between now and then. It's almost a certainty that Ohio State will try to counter with a higher NIL offer or other incentives. Stay tuned for more information, but this is definitely a promising development.
