Michigan has a huge leg up on O-line prospect nearing 5-star status

Michigan football should have a great chance to land Mataio Fano in the 2028 recruiting class.

Things have been rapidly heating up for Michigan football on the recruiting trail. The Wolverines have reeled in some important commitments, as recently as last week, and started this week trending for another major recruiting victory, this time over Notre Dame.

Some wondered how Kyle Whittingham would do on the recruiting trail. After building an elite recruiting apparatus, which includes former Michigan football assistant Ron Bellamy as the director of player personnel, a genius move to shore up in-state recruiting, the Wolverines are on a roll.

If the predictions for four-star wideout Quentin Burrell come true, meaning a commitment, Michigan will have landed three players in the top 150 overall in the past month, dating back to the flip of four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati.

Michigan has the perfect in with a near five-star recruit

Another elite recruiting target that Michigan football fans will soon need to know about is four-star offensive tackle Mataio Fano, who is out of Orem, Utah.

The 2028 recruiting is the younger brother of Spencer Fano, who was just drafted ninth overall by the Cleveland Browns after being recruited by Kyle Whittingham to Utah. Jim Harding played an essential role in the recruitment of Fano, too, as well as his development.

Harding's track record has already paid off. It allowed Michigan football to keep some stellar offensive linemen who had entered the portal. Last week, it was a driving factor in Michigan landing in-state offensive tackle Jakari Lipsey.

Fano, who is listed at 6-foot-5, nearly 240 pounds, is ranked 23rd overall in the 2027 class by 247 Sports. He's ranked 75th in the composite rankings.

Michigan, UCLA, and Utah are listed as "warm" according to his 247 Sports profile, and his relationship with Harding is one reason why. He also knows Michigan EDGE coach Lewis Powell, too. His brother Logan Fano played EDGE for him at Utah.

"I’ve known them for a while, and I’ve just basically grown up with them," Fano said of the Michigan assistants.

Miami and Oregon have also offered, but it feels like Michigan already has an inside track for one of the top offensive line prospects in the 2028 recruiting class.
