Michigan football landed its seventh commitment of the 2027 recruiting class on Saturday, but that wasn't the only positive from the recruiting trail.

The Wolverines also cracked the top five of elite 2027 defensive back Tavares Harrington. Out of the Chicago area, Harrington is 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, and ranked 124th overall via the Rivals Industry Rankings. He's ranked eighth in the state of Illinois and No. 8 among safeties.

Harrington has also been listed as a cornerback. He's got versatility, which is one reason he's so highly-touted. Michigan football has been trending up, though. The Wolverines made the final cut along with Notre Dame, Auburn, Alabama, and Ole Miss.

Where Michigan football stands in the recruitment of Tavares Harrington

While Alabama made the cut, it feels like this recruitment is down to four programs: Michigan, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and Auburn. Those are the four programs Harrington visited this spring. He actually visited Michigan and Notre Dame twice.

Ole Miss is the other program that has an official visit scheduled. The Irish and Wolverines are scheduled to get him on campus on June 19th, which will be Victors Weekend. The Irish will host him the week before. Ole Miss has the other visit (June 5th),.

Notre Dame has the lead for Harrington via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, but that prediction dates back to Steve Wiltfong's September forecast for the Irish. That's why the Irish have an 80 percent chance via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine to land his commitment.

The real odds seem closer than that. Michigan is estimated to have about a five-percent chance, and with the momentum the Wolverines have on the trail right now, especially in another head-to-head battle against Notre Dame from the Chicago area, anything seems possible in this recruitment.

Michigan is making gains in Chicago, and there's a chance that the Wolverines steal away two blue-chippers from Notre Dame's backyard in the 2027 class.
