Despite being a 3-star, Michigan's latest commitment has a 'high-ceiling'

Michigan football landed the commitment of Brayden Watson, who has a really high upside despite being a three-star recruit.

Michigan football picked up another big-time commitment on the recruiting trail on Friday, even if the rankings might not suggest it.

Brayden Watson, who plays for Buford High School in Georgia, one of the best high school football programs in the country, announced his commitment to the Wolverines on Friday over Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh, and others.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound linebacker is ranked No. 505 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's also ranked 39th among linebackers.

Linebacker was a key position of need for Michigan football in the 2027 class. The Wolverines could use more impact players at the position, although there are still some strong young players who seem poised to emerge this season and in the future.

Michigan's latest commitment is better than his ranking suggests

It was clear, though, that the new Michigan linebackers coach, Alex Whittingham, made Watson a top priority. Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine posted on X that Watson is a "versatile" linebacker who has a "high ceiling" and plenty of room to grow."

Watson played a lot of outside linebacker in high school in more of a 4-3 defense. He's even split out in the slot at times, covering players. He's got good instincts and feels like he would fit well with the Wolverines, who need linebackers who can run, hit, and cover.

Watson fits that mold. He also told Chad Simmons of On3.com what separated Michigan football in his recruitment.

"The relationships, the attention to detail, and the experience in Ann Arbor separated Michigan from the rest," Watson told Simmons.

Numerous recruits have mentioned what can be called the Kyle Whittingham difference. Four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell talked about how the Michigan football program has "completely changed" under Whittingham.

Five-star recruit Joshua Dobson also offered an endorsement of Whittingham, saying he believes the head coach will win at Michigan. This has all led to an impressive run of commitments. That's 11 in the month of May. Michigan football has 16 overall.

11 of Michigan's commitments are blue-chip prospects. The class ranks in the top 10 of the 247 Sports Composite Team Rankings, and Whittingham's program isn't slowing down.
