Another Michigan football recruiting target is announcing his decision on Thursday afternoon, as four-star EDGE Myles Smith, one of the top in-state prospects for the 2027 class has a commitment announcement on the horizon.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound EDGE out of Farmington, Michigan, is ranked as the No. 7 recruit in the state of Michigan for the 2027 class, as well as No. 257 overall, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.
The Wolverines were behind the 8-ball in this recruitment. That happens with any head coaching change, but it feels like Michigan football fell even farther behind. The Wolverines hosted Smith for an unffocial visit back on April 2nd, that was a positive sign moving forward.
The blue-chip prospect also has an official visit scheduled for Victors Weekend on June 19th. Yet, with a commitment announcement coming Thursday afternoon, you wonder if that visit will actually happen.
Can Michigan pull off a surprise?
There haven't been any Michigan football coaches teasing commitments recently. It's always possible that they don't ahead of this particular commitment, but it's been a regular occurrence.
Larry Black is listed as the primary recruiter via On3. He has posted before other commitments, too, so just based on that, I don't really like where Michigan is trending heading into this announcement.
Smith is going to announce his decision live on the Rivals YouTube Channel at 3 PM EST.
The Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Michigan a slight lead with a 24 percent chance of winning the commitment compared to 17 percent for Michigan State. However, the Wolverines' chances don't feel that high.
Indiana, the defending national champions, were able to get Smith on campus for an official visit two weeks ago. The fact that a commitment is coming now, before Smith can even take his official visit to Ann Arbor seems telling, although plenty have committed without doing that.
There haven't been any crystal ball predictions or projections for the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine for any team. Indiana feels like it could be the one to pull off a commitment, yet Kyle Whittingham's staff has shown it can pull off a surprise on the recruiting trail, so you never know.
If the Wolverines miss on Smith, the good news is that they have been trending for another dynamic pass rusher, Seth Tillman. He's a defensive lineman with 24 sacks over the past two seasons, but there's nothing wrong with adding both.
