Michigan football lost one of its 2027 commitments to Minnesota on Saturday, as three-star recruit Maxwell Miles flipped to the Golden Gophers after an official visit.
If you have been paying attention, This isn't all that surprising. We wrote earlier this week about how you could see this coming.
Miles, out of Las Vegas, has multiple official visits scheduled. UNLV was expected to host him for an official visit, before Minnesota swooped in and closed the deal this weekend.
Miles is a solid prospect. He's 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, and ranked No. 851 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings for the 2027 class. Outside of Michigan, Minnesota, Wake Forest, Washington State, and Cal were some of the other top programs in the mix.
Why Michigan fans should worry about Maxwell Miles decommitment
This isn't meant as an insult, but this recruitment just didn't seem to fit for Michigan. Cal, UNLV, Minnesota, and Washington State aren't exactly the teams the Wolverines are used to recruiting with.
That doesn't mean Miles isn't going to turn into a solid player, but it feels like Michigan started having other priorities in the class. Once the three-star prospect had some other visits, it seemed like the writing was on the wall as far as a decommitment.
It's not one that fans need to panic about. For starters, there are only so many roster spots available, and the way the Wolverines have been adding commitments, with 11 in May alone, more should be on the way in June with a loaded schedule of official visitors.
Even after the decommitment, Michigan has 15 commitments. It would be surprising to see the Wolverines sign a full 25-man class. With the transfer portal and roster limits, it makes more sense to save more spots for portal players, so that could have been at play, too.
Michigan also recently extended an offer to a four-star safety, Andre Hyppolite. He's ranked No. 211 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's out of Miami, so it's easy to see why the Hurricanes are the favorite, at least according to the 247 Sports crystal ball.
That prediction came back in March. Minnesota hosted him for an official visit this weekend. Georgia, Miami, and Florida are also expected to get official visits. He had 63 tackles last season to go along with five interceptions.
It's hard to know exactly what happened with Miles, but Michigan already has Charles Woodson Jr, and also Tavares Harrington, a possible safety, along with four-star cornerback Darius Johnson.
With those commitments and the other targets on the board, there's zero reason to worry.
