We are in the beginning stages of the 2027 recruiting cycle. Michigan Football has gotten off to a slow start in the 2027 class due to staff overhaul, but the Wolverines are working hard to give themselves a chance with the nation's elite. With the 2026 class having finished 12th in the nation, it will be interesting to see if Michigan can replicate that success, considering its late start.
Kyle Whittingham is Determined
There's been some concern surrounding the hire of Kyle Whittingham regarding recruiting. Questions have been asked about the 66 year old coaches recruiting drive, whether or not he would embrace NIL, and if he would be willing to pursue the best prospects in the nation. Those were all valid questions to ask, as Whittingham never truly had the chance to recruit the best of the best at Utah.
Whittingham made sure to rapidly address any concerns about his recruiting. He's quickly assembled an elite staff - both on and off the field - and seems committed to going after the best recruits possible. He's also erased any worries that he was going to bring Utah to Michigan in his hires of Larry Black as a defensive line coach and Dave Peloquin as GM (which both look like home run hires). Whittingham isn't playing around.
While we haven't seen any commitments in the 2027 class since Whittingham was hired, Michigan has made plenty of progress with a number of top recruits. Just recently, five-star Georgia cornerback commit Donte Wright set an official visit to Michigan. Before that, elite defensive lineman Marcus Fakatou set two visits to Ann Arbor. Whittingham and his staff are being aggressive on the trail. They know what they can do at Michigan, and it looks like Whittingham is more determined than ever. After all, Michigan is his best chance to win a National Championship, and it's clear that he wants that.
What's A Reasonable Class Expectation in 2027?
It's tough to say whether recruiting in year one will be better or worse under Whittingham. It seems clear that the program is in a better position recruiting-wise, but losing so much time because of the coaching change makes things tough. On the other hand, Whittingham and Co have put Michigan in a position where the Wolverines are going to have their shot with the best of the best this season.
The Wolverines definitely won't experience a significant drop-off in recruiting in 2027. A reasonable floor for the class would likely be ~15-20th in the nation. I'd be pretty shocked if they ended up around 20th in the nation. The ceiling looks like it could realistically be ~8-12th. That ceiling is limitied, in my opinion, due to the relationship building that Michigan has lost out on. Top recruits have been building relationships with programs for years now, and Michigan essentially had to restart from step one. For some recruits, that can be overcome. But for others, it's too much.
Regardless, it's going to be super exciting to see how this staff does on the recruiting trail. Kyle Whittingham has this program energized, and he has all the support he could need. It's going to be exciting to see what he does on the recruiting trail in his first year.
