Michigan football starting QB won't be decided until after season starts

The Michigan football QB competition is going to bleed into the season and there's nothing wrong with that.

There's this saying that if you have two quarterbacks, you really have none. But I don't know if that applies to Michigan football this season.

The Wolverines are trying to determine who their starting quarterback will be and at this point, it's a two-horse race between Davis Warren and Alex Orji.

I've been a huge proponent of Orji. He's such a dynamic athlete that if he can figure it out as a passer, the Michigan football offense could be dangerous.

But Sherrone Moore has said protecting the ball is No. 1. Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy were great at that. That's a huge reason why the Wolverines have won so many games the past three seasons.

The latest on Michigan football QB competition

The Big Ten Network crew was at Michigan football practice earlier this week and they talked up both quarterbacks. Now, according to Chris Balas of The Wolverine, both quarterbacks are going to play in the first game against Fresno State and whoever wins the job, will essentially have to win it on the field as McCarthy did during the 2022 season.

Balas also reported that Michigan football likes the idea of Texas having to prepare for two quarterbacks. I don't know if that's a huge advantage, but I've argued that a two-QB system could work this season for Michigan football.

The Wolverines have an elite defense and should have an elite running game, especially with Orji having a bigger role on the offense, whether he's the starting quarterback or not.

Jalen Milroe took some time to take over the Alabama job, but once he did last season, the Tide took off. Michigan football could have something similar happen with Orji. He's a freak athlete and he's already a weapon on the ground.

But if he can turn his arm into a weapon too, then it will be clear who Michigan should start at quarterback. But if Davis Warren is making plays and keeps throwing the ball as well as he has, it's hard not to think both will have a role.

At some point, you want someone to take the bull by the horns. But for now, Michigan football is fine with the wait-and-see approach it seems.
