Final thoughts on Michigan football QB battle before Fresno State
Reading the tea leaves, it feels like Michigan football will start Davis Warren tonight against Fresno State in the season opener for the defending national champions.
For much of all camp, it felt like Alex Orji was going to be the guy. Pete Thamel of ESPN even reported that Orji was "expected" to start.
However, that report came with over a week left in fall camp. According to reports, the competition continued, and Davis Warren has grabbed the momentum. Warren isn't a dual-threat like Alex Orji, but if he can effectively throw the ball it probably won't matter.
What's interesting is that Orji is going to have a role. Kirk Campbell, the Michigan football offensive coordinator said as much earlier this offseason. Orji should have his own package if he's not the starting quarterback and he needs to be allowed to throw the ball.
Starting job won't be determined by fall camp
If Warren starts tonight, that doesn't mean he's the "starter." Whether it's him or Orji, neither quarterback will win the job unless they play well against Frenso State and maybe not even then.
The question for either quarterback, if they are successful, will be if they can duplicate that effort against Texas?
I'll admit that the only thing that will surprise me tonight is that if we don't see both quarterbacks. That's probably been the plan all along. It always felt like the QB competition was going to bleed into the season and we'll see it play out tonight.
Maybe Michigan football is destined for a two-quarterback system. Or maybe, the job will be settled tonight. That will be worth watching just like U-M fans will also be watching the battles at center and right tackle.
