According to Pete Thamel, it's expected that Michigan football will start Alex Orji at quarterback.

According to a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN on Saturday, Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore is being "coy" about who will be the Wolverines starting quarterback.

There has been a lot of talk about the competition turning into a "two-horse race" between Orji and former walk-on Davis Warren.

The Big Ten Network was at Michigan football fall camp earlier this week and praised the play of both quarterbacks. The key for Orji is being able to throw the ball and protect it, consistently.

Orji is a dangerous weapon on the ground and could, along with Donovan Edwards, and an elite offensive line, give Michigan won of the best ground games in all of college football.

Warren is a solid passer but he's doesn't offer anything on the ground. I've said all along that Orji winning the Michigan football quarterback job is the best-case scenario, just due to his upside at the position and here's what Thamel reported about the Wolverines QB battle.

“Well, Sherrone’s playing a little coy publicly, but sources have told me that Michigan has given Alex Orji the majority of the first-team reps at practice,” Thamel said. “He’s the expected starter right now within that program.”

Recently, it sounded like both quarterbacks might play against Fresno State but if what Thamel says is true than the Michigan football will start Orji and play the other quarterbacks only if the game gets out of hand.

Moore has seven days to name a starter but part of me feels like he won't before the first game, which won't give Michigan a huge advantage. But it will be interesting to see if Thamel's report proves to be correct. Either way, there's no disputing that Orji has the highest ceiling.
