Michigan football was recently projected for a major recruiting victory in the 2028 class, but the good news isn't limited to 2028.

While there aren't many irons still in the fire in the 2027 recruiting class, outside of some flip attempts, the Wolverines got some positive news on Thursday from four-star tight end Colt Lumpris, one of the top-ranked recruits who is committed to U-M.

The 6-foot-7, 240-pound tight end, who is ranked No. 214 overall in the 2027 class, via the 247 Sports composite rankings, told Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine that he considers his recruitment to be "shut down."

Lumpris, who has as big of an upside as any Michigan football recruit in the 2027 class, said he was "locked in" with the Wolverines.

Good news that was expected from Michigan football commit Colt Lumpris

It seems like more and more recruits have to pledge their loyalty and shut down their recruitment to keep other teams from coming after them. Michigan beat out some impressive opponents to land the commitment of Lumpris, namely Alabama, the team the Wolverines rallied past late to land him.

Lumpris has played mostly in the slot in his high school career, so he's going to be a weapon right away in the passing game, not unlike Colston Loveland, who emerged as a freshman near the end of the season.

"Should be viewed as an immensely high-ceiling pass catcher with an ideal blend of route-running savvy and contested catch ability. Could eventually draw looks from NFL scouts if he keeps progressing," The 247 Sports scouting report said about the four-star tight end.

Lumpris is ranked as the 15th-best tight end in 2027. That seems low honestly. He might have some work to do as a blocker, but looking at the way the coaching was able to use J.J. Buchanan right away as a freshman, it doesn't seem like it will take long for the talented pass catcher to get involved.

Scouts have said he has huge upside, which he does. He will also give Michigan football a potential matchup nightmare in the red zone, one that doesn't just have to be an in-line tight end.

Lumpris is the seventh-highest-ranked commitment for Michigan football in the 2027 class. The Wolverines have six in the top 160, and five in the top 125. The Wolverines' class is ranked 11th via the 247 Sports team composite rankings.
