It didn't take long for Kyle Whittingham to land a major recruiting win from the state of Ohio, and if things keep trending the way they are, another could be coming for the Michigan football program.
Whittingham, who is in his first season as the Michigan football head coach, landed the commitment of four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert earlier this month, giving the Wolverines one of the best players in the state of Ohio in the 2027 class.
That was a major recruiting win for Whittingham. It was the first big-time commitment out of Ohio since Jordan Marshall in the 2024 class.
What's even better is that it could be a sign of things to come. Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine has projected another key player from the Buckeye State to the Wolverines in four-star EDGE Asa Burch.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound pass rusher out of Warren, Ohio, has a 93 percent chance of committing to Michigan football, according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.
Ohio State has offered, and the Buckeyes don't offer every kid from Ohio. That was the case with Rod Moore, another solid get from the Buckeye State in the past decade. They have been few and far between, though.
Burch is actually a Michigan legacy. That seems to be helping the Wolverines in this recruitment. However, a visit earlier this spring seemed to put Michigan in the pole position.
Burch visited twice last fall under the previous coaching staff. He also visited Michigan during April. Penn State and Ohio State had him on campus in June, but McDowell favors the Wolverines in this race as Whittingham's staff turns its attention to the 2028 class.
Ranked No. 127 overall in the Rivals Industry Rankings in the 2028 class, Burch is also ranked fourth in the state of Ohio. He is also the second EDGE recruit in the 2028 class that is trending to Michigan.
Another blue-chip projected to Michigan football
Major Stokes, another four-star ranked just outside the top 100, has been projected to the Wolverines. He's out of Utah, so things are off to a strong start in 2028.
It would be nice to get a commitment on the board sooner rather than later. Michigan did land a kicker, but that doesn't really count as the first commitment of the class. Burch or Stokes would be a major get. Right now, it feels like the Wolverines should get both, which would bode well for the future of the defensive line, especially the pass rush.
