If there is one thing that Mike Boynton has already proven he can do as a head coach, it's recruit.

Even though his record at Oklahoma State wasn't spectacular, despite three 20-win seasons and one NCAA Tournament berth, Boynton was able to sign five-star Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall recruit in his class, as well as the future No. 1 pick.

That was the team that got Boynton his NCAA Tournament win. The new Michgan basketball head coach also showed off those chops in his two seasons as Dusty May's assistant. He played a vital role in landing recruits like Trey McKenney and Brandon McCoy, as well as many others.

The defensive guru just has a knack for finding good players, and being able to recruit them. That bodes well for the future, especially if Boynton can do enough to earn a contract extension. The details of his two-year contract were revealed this week.

There are some benchmarks he will need to reach to get a second year, but Boynton isn't wasting any time on the recruiting trail, getting an official visit scheduled for next week with five-star 2027 recruit Chase Lumpkin.

This is according, to a report from Joe Tipton of Rivals.

Michigan is a serious contender for 5-star combo guard Chase Lumpkin

Out of Powder Springs, Georgia, Lumpkin has seen his recruitment take off in the past month. He was offered on June 12th, just before Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks head coaching job. He was also offered by Iowa, UCLA, USC, Cincinnati, Arizona State, Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, Miami, and Providence. That's just been since the end of May.

Despite a growing number of teams pushing for the commitment of the combo guard, Boynton has made some progress in this recruitment, as the Wolverines will get him on campus for an official visit.

This is around the start of the busy season for basketball recruiting. Players often visit during football games, too. Michigan basketball doesn't have any commitments in the 2027 class. It will be interesting to see how things develop with Lumpkin and other recruits.

Boynton isn't shying away, though. He's extended some offers in 2028 and 2029, too, as he should. The new Michigan head coach is acting as though he will be in Ann Arbor for the long haul, and if he delivers a quality season in 2026-27, that will be a good start.

Alabama has a 34 percent chance to land Lumpkin's commitment, via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine. Michigan has a 16 percent chance.

Lumpkin has visited Alabama three times and Kentucky twice. Alabama is one of three teams that are scheduled for an official visit. Michigan and USC are the others.
