Michigan basketball has a new head coach. After a short time as the interim head coach, Mike Boynton had the interim tag removed.
The former Michigan basketball head coach, Dusty May, who is now in charge of the Dallas Mavericks, is a big fan of the move, offering this glowing endorsement of his former assistant.

"You couldn't ask for a better person to lead Michigan basketball. Mike has poured everything he has into this program from the day he got here. He's an outstanding coach, an even better person, and our players believe in him because they see the work he puts in every single day," May said via a release from the University, announcing Boynton's hire.
May went on to say that Boynton would do an "outstanding job" as the Wolverines' head coach. Boynton also got ringing endorsements from Cade Cunningham, John Beilein, and Yaxel Lendeborg.
Beilein said it was "absolutely" the right time for Boynton to be Michigan's next head coach, a job he earned the past two seasons, and after keeping all of May's former players on the roster, a task that seemed nearly impossible a few weeks ago.

Mike Boynton has the chops to win at Michigan says multiple coaches and former players
We don't know if Boynton will be a national-championship head coach. We didn't know when Dusty May was hired. He got better and evolved. Boynton will have to improve from his time with Oklahoma State, even though there are some promising things about his tenure there.
Oklahoma State had three 20-win seasons under Boynton. The Cowboys won an NCAA Tournament game and also had Cade Cunningham, as well as the former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Boynton's program had three top-20 defensive finishes according to the KenPom rankings. That's a great sign moving forward. Elite defense was the anchor the past two seasons as much as anything.
Michigan basketball won the national title because it had the best defense in college basketball. That should be the goal next season with Boynton as the head coach; it's a realistic possibility.
Michigan was faced with a terrible situation, but the Wolverines naviigated it in a way that kept their championship window open.
