The first objective for Michigan basketball interim head coach Mike Boynton was to retain the Wolverines roster after Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks.

That has been achieved. LJ Cason is the only player who hasn't announced or confirmed it through the media. He is taking part in some team appearances, though, so it feels like it's a forgone conclusion that Cason will be back, meaning Boynton batted 14/14.

The next task is to build a coaching staff. There was some news on that front on Thursday, as Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press reported that recruiting coordinator Drew Williamson is joining May's staff with the Mavericks.

At his press conference, May said his new staff would feature some former Michigan coaches and some others. Williamson is one who will be on the Mavericks staff.

Mike Boynton appears to keep key assistant coach in the fold for Michigan basketball

Michigan basketball was bound to lose some assistants. It's not the end of the world, but, if you read the tea leaves, it feels like one of May's most important assistants might be sticking around.

Akeem Miskdeen has worked with May at Florida Atlantic and Michigan. He was also an assistant coach at Florida, Florida State, and Georgia in the past. Over the past two seasons, Miskdeen has proven to be a dynamic recruiter. He has also played a key role in keeping the team together.

Miskdeen has been reposting recruitment announcements, according to Dylan Burkhardt of UM Hoops, who also reported that he was seen wearing Michigan gear while he was out recruiting.

Miskdeen has been known to be close to Elliot Cadeau, so that was a good sign when the point guard was coming back, that Miskdeen could be, too. It feels like he could be Boynton's assistant head coach. He would understand the situation. He helped recruit the team, and if he can help it have another successful season, Boynton and the staff should be in Ann Arbor long term.

You never know until deals are finalized. There are still questions about Kyle Church and other assistants. Church seems bound to follow May, but it's not like Boynton has never been a head coach before. He was a seven-year head coach for Oklahoma State. He will be able to build a quality staff, but Miskdeen would be a huge first step. We'll see who is next.
