In Dusty May's introductory press conference with the Dallas Mavericks, the former Michigan basketball head coach hinted at hiring some coaches away from college to fill out his staff in Dallas.
You would think that he plans to take some coaches who have followed him from previous stops in college to the NBA. There are some on Michigan's staff that interim coach Mike Boynton has to say no to; you can't have them. Giving them raises would definitely entice them to stay in town.
Keeping the players is one thing. Boynton has already retained Elliot Cadeau, Trey McKenney, and now, 7-foot-2 center Moustapha Thiam, the Wolverines' biggest addition via the transfer portal, but Boynton has to put a staff together, too.
Here are two assistants he needs for the Michigan basketball coaching staff.
Mike Boynton must retain 2 assistant coaches at Michigan
Drew Williamson
Known as an up-and-coming coach, Drew Williamson has been with May since 2021. He's played a key role in the recruitment of the championship roster and helped develop the frontcourt with him.
Williamson is a future head coach in waiting, but an opportunity to coach in the NBA will be tempting if May comes calling for his valuable services. So far Boynton is hitting 100 percent off the court with the retentions of three starters. Keeping Williamson would be like retaining one more.
KT Harrell
Another assistant who May might go after is KT Harrell. He's been the one of the best director of basketball operations in the country since he joined May's staff at FAU. Harrell has only endured one losing season over the course of his days on the sidelines with May. That's pretty remarkable for the twosome. Someday Harrell's alma mater could be calling his agent to offer the head coaching gig to him if Bruce Pearl's son doesn't work out at Auburn.
