We don't know for certain who will be the head coach for the Michigan basketball team in the 2026-27 season, but we do know who Trey McKenney wants it to be.

That's the interim head coach for Michigan basketball, Mike Boynton. He was named to that role last week by Warde Manuel, but the announcement was vague. It's not clear if Boynton is the interim coach for now, or for the 2026-27 season.

Boynton did an interview with the Athletic on Sunday and said that he hoped to have the interim tag removed. He also said there would be certain challenges that come along with being an interim head coach.

It will be difficult to recruit. The players also might be more willing to look somewhere else if they don't know the plan beyond this season. When it comes to McKenney, the plan has always started with Boynton, who played a huge role in recruiting Trey and most of the team, according to what his father told Hall Media in a recent podcast.

“Trey told Warde in — in no uncertain teams — I need, I want Mike Boynton,” John McKenney explained. “I’m not trying to hear those other dudes. Because what a lot of people don’t realize on the outside is Boynton was a lot of these guys’ main recruiter, outside of [senior guard Elliot] Cadeau. Cadeau was Dusty’s recruit, because Dusty and his prep school coach [current McNeese State head coach Bill Armstrong] were best friends.”

John McKenney said that five or six teams reached out to gauge the interest of Trey McKenney to leave the Wolverines, even before May departed for the Mavericks. So the vultures have been circling. McKenney has committed to Michigan basketball. Elliot Cadeau has, too.

Michigan needs to secure the big men on the roster, as well as five-star signee Brandon McCoy. Those three players are all essential, along with McDonald's All-American Quinn Costello.

Hiring Boynton will give Michigan the best chance of keeping the roster together. The players believe in him, and he has been a head coach for seven years with mixed results at Oklahoma State. Boynton has three 20-win seasons, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and recruited Cade Cunningham to Stillwater.

Michigan needs to name him the head coach. Give him a multi-year deal and let the man get to work. Fans might not agree with that, but McKenney and the players will.
