Details from the new contract given to Michigan basketball head coach Mike Boynton have been revealed, and they show high expectations for the 2026-27 season.
Boynton, who served a seven-year term as the head coach of Oklahoma State, had three 20-win seasons for the Cowboys, but if he wants to coach the Wolverines beyond the 2026-27 season, he will have to do better than that, especially with a roster that experts have consistently ranked among the top five or top 10 in all of college basketball.

Next season is going to make or break Boynton's tenure. It would be surprising if he earned a second season without earning a second contract.
However, here are the details reported by the Detroit News.
Boynton will need to meet two of four benchmarks in order to ensure a second season as the head coach: a 24-win regular season, a top-4 finish in the Big Ten, a conference tournament title, and a Sweet 16 berth.
Based on the roster, all of those things are doable. This is fair to Boynton, because it protects him from getting fired due to an NCAA Tournament upset, assuming the regular season went really well.
It also gives him the chance to make up for a mediocre regular season with a deep NCAA Tournament run. The contract also stipulates that if the Wolverines make the Final Four, he is guaranteed the second year, too, just having to meet that one guideline.
The reality is that if Boynton hits those benchmarks, he is getting a contract extension. Michigan basketball doesn't want to have a lame-duck coach, especially one coming off a really successful season. That would only hamper recruiting, which is one of Boynton's strengths.
Remember, he was able to get Cade Cunningham to play for Oklahoma State. He was also able to retain 13 of the 14 players Dusty May had recruited to be on the team. Mike Martin looks like a really good hire, and if Boynton can keep the defense elite, with all of the talent on offense, there is a still a ton of upside for this team.
There is enough talent to win another national championship. There could be as many as three lottery picks on this team. Boynton will need to do his part. If he does, he will be the head coach for the foreseeable future.
