Michigan Wolverines news: Roddy Gayle update, Wolverines in the NBA, and more

College football is in full swing, and so are other fall sports, but winter is already creeping up, with the start of October just a day away. That means the college basketball season is already just around the corner, and Michigan fans will be busy trying to watch both teams in Ann Arbor.

With that said, there is lots to catch up on this week around Michigan Athletics, with soccer, volleyball, and football going on. Hockey is about to drop the puck on its season as well, making it a very busy time for the Wolverines, and we are here to help you follow the news.

Roddy Gayle is added to Michigan 2026-2027 basketball roster

Michigan made two official additions to its roster recently, with Columbia transfer Kenny Noland officially joining the team and the return of Roddy Gayle. This is huge for a Wolverines team that took some hits in the offseason, especially with the recent injury to five-star freshman Brandon McCoy, who tore his ACL during Michigan's European exhibitions.

Noland was granted a preliminary injunction for a fifth year this season, but is still waiting for his official trial. Gayle, on the other hand, won his trial against the NCAA in the Niagara County Supreme Court, which will allow him to play with the Wolverines this season, pending an NCAA appeal. Trey McKenney posted a video of Gayle in uniform for the team's photo shoot, so as of right now, you can expect to see him on the court.

Three Michigan Wolverines are about to begin their rookies seasons in the NBA

Michigan made history in the 2026 NBA Draft with three players drafted in the top 12 picks, none of whom were freshmen, and now they are about to make their NBA debuts later in October. It probably doesn't feel too different for Morez Johnson Jr., who ended up following Dusty May to Dallas as the Mavs' first-round pick. Aday Mara will be paired up with NBA star Chet Holmgren in Oklahoma City, and Yaxel Lendeborg is learning from the best at Golden State.

Lendeborg is already showing his coaches the type of player he is, practically refusing to leave the gym. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr spoke about Lendeborg during media days and said he has had to have multiple conversations with him about leaving the gym and enjoying life a little bit before the season begins.

Little does Kerr know that Lendeborg's life is basketball, and that is what makes him so great.

After taking down the No. 1 team in the country for the first time in program history, the Michigan women's soccer team has hit a bit of a rut with back-to-back losses. The win over Michigan State was great, but the Wolverines were unable to continue the success, dropping them in the Big Ten rankings.

The start of conference play has not been great for the Michigan volleyball team, dropping games to No. 14 Penn State and Washington. The Wolverines showed some fight against the Nittany Lions, stealing a set at home, but ended up getting shut out 3-0 against the Huskies. Now, Michigan will take the long trip to California to face USC on Friday.

The college hockey season is just days from starting, with the Wolverines hitting the ice on Friday. Michigan will open the season with a two-game series against Bowling Green on Friday and Saturday night. After winning the Big Ten Championship last season but falling in the Frozen Four, the Wolverines are ready to get back on the ice and defend their conference title and win the big game at the end of the season.
