Michigan hockey has had a rich history of success on the ice, bringing in top talent that then goes on to great careers in the NHL, and head coach Brandon Maurato just landed another big talent out of the Class of 2027.
Coming off a Big Ten title win before a loss in the first round of the Frozen Four against No. 4 Denver in double overtime, Michigan has been busy on the recruiting trail. The Wolverines just notched another big win before the start of the 2026-2027 season in October. Maurato landed a commitment from the No. 16 recruit in the country, five-star recruit Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll.
The catch to this commitment is that Gordon-Carroll is eligible for the 2027 NHL Draft and is expected to be a later first-round draft pick.

Gordon-Carroll spent the last two years playing in the WHL (Western Hockey League) with the Medicine Hat Tigers, where he will remain for the rest of the 2026-2027 season before heading to Ann Arbor.
Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll is just the latest recruiting win for Michigan hockey
Michigan is set to kick off the season on October 2 when it faces off against Bowling Green, but the wins are already coming in for the Wolverines. Gordon-Carroll's commitment is just the latest in a big offseason of recruiting for Maurato.
Gordon-Carroll's commitment comes a few days after forward Dima Zhilkin, who is considered one of the top prospects for the 2027 NHL Entry Draft, pledged his commitment to the Wolverines. These two stars join Landon Dupont, the consensus top prospect in the 2027 recruiting class.
Even after a loss in the first round of the Frozen Four last season, Michigan is proving it is still one of the top programs when it comes to recruiting. Gordon-Carroll may only spend one season with the Wolverines before heading to the NHL ranks, but he brings a ton of talent, including time with the U18 and U17 USA Hockey teams and a gold medal at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games.
In two seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Gordon-Carroll scored a total of 18 goals and 62 points, which is remarkable at the ages of 16 and 17. With another season in the WHL ahead of him, those numbers will most certainly improve.
Even though Michigan won't get its trio of talent in the 2027 class for another year, the future of the Wolverines on the ice is looking really solid.
