Michigan's under-the-radar flip attempt has turned into a battle of blue bloods

Michigan football might have surprised some people when it offered Errol Kerns, but it has turned into a blue-blood recruiting battle.

There might have been some Michigan football fans who were a little confused when the Wolverines offered Miami, Ohio commitment Errol Kerns.

The 5-foot-11, 198-pound defensive back is ranked No. 738 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He has been committed to the RedHawks, out of the MAC,

The three-star defensive back, who is definitely underrated, committed to Miami (OH) back in April. Two weeks later, Kyle Whittingham and Michigan football extended a scholarship offer, causing his recruitment to blow up.

Since Kerns was offered by the Wolverines, 11 other programs have entered the mix. These aren't just run-of-the-mill teams either. We are talking about Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, and others like Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Northwestern.

Not many blue-blood programs down South have offered, but in the Midwest, when you have Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio State battling for a kid, that's right where you want to be. The only team's missing are the likes of Notre Dame and Penn State.

Michigan football's early offer might have given it an edge with Errol Kearns

It does show that the Wolverines know what they are doing in evaluations, which might have given them a leg up already in this recruitment. Kerns is still committed to Miami (OH), but that can only last for so long at this point, especially with official visits schedule with Michigan, Indiana, and Texas A&M.

Ohio State is lingering in this recruitment, too, and the Buckeyes are always tough to beat for a recruit when they zero in on one. Kerns is out of Indianapolis, which should give the Hoosiers something to say about his commitment, although Indiana just landed a four-star EDGE from Michigan, so location isn't always everything.

It will be interesting to see where things go from here. Kerns posted 90 tackles this season, five pass breakups, and three interceptions, but it was the 10.78 in the 100-meter dash that is likely causing so many teams to enter the mix. He has also long jumped 22 feet, 10 inches.

It's only a matter of time before his ranking updates, and he moves up, closer to the four-star range. More importantly, it feels only a matter of time before he ends up committed to one of the blue-blood programs chasing his commitment.

The Wolverines were the first big school to enter the mix. They have an extra visit on the other contenders, and maybe just enough of an advantage to land what would be a major commitment if Michigan was able to get it.
