Michigan football landed an elite cornerback on Wednesday, Monsanna Torbert, after beating out the Ohio State Buckeyes for the top-100 prospect out of Cincinnati.
However, there was another elite cornerback on the board, 5-star Joshua Dobson. He was announcing his commitment on the same day, and ended up choosing South Carolina over Michigan and Texas A&M.
In an interview after the commitment, Dobson made it clear it was down to Michigan football and South Carolina. He also said it wasn't over until he "signed on the dotted line."
Dobson was hinting that a flip was still possible. He left the door wide open for it; however, Michigan football fans should temper their excitement for one reason.
Money is why South Carolina landed Joshua Dobson
Dobson is ranked 13th overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, so it was going to take some NIL resources to land his commitment. South Carolina ponied up, making him one of the seven highest-paid recruits in the entire 2027 class, according to Pete Nakos of On3.

What's interesting is that of those seven, only one is a quarterback: Nebraska commit Trae Taylor. There are two defensive backs, with Dobson included. But that's a sign that if Michigan wants to have a chance to flip Dobson, it will have to beat that offer.
That's just basic logic. Bryce Underwood flipped, in part, becasue Michigan paid him a lot of money. It would take a similar effort to flip Dobson, plus there's no guarantee that South Carolina wouldn't match it.
Dobson is from North Carolina. He's not an in-state kid, but it feels close to that. Shane Beamer has a great rapport with him, but Kyle Whittingham does, too. Dobson and his family were completely sold on Michigan. Yet, it seems that the Wolverines weren't willing to get into a bidding war.
I doubt that changes before Early National Signing Day. The Wolverines have three four-star commitments at cornerback in Torbert, Darius Johnson, and Blake Jenkins, in addition to four-star CB/S Tavares Harrington, and three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr.
Torbert is just under 5-foot-11, but he's a dynamic athlete and cover guy. He accounted for over 2,000 yards playing quarterback, while also notching 40 tackles and three interceptions. He could even have a role like Jabrill Peppers.
With all that talent committed in the secondary, it's easy to see why the Wolverines wouldn't break the bank for Dobson.
