Dusty May is a machine. He hasn't rested since Michigan basketball won the national championship three days ago, and already has his first transfer portal commitment.
It's not just any commitment either. May and the Wolverines have landed the commitment of former Tennessee forward J.P. Estrella, one of the top-ranked players in the portal, ranking in the top 25, according to 247 Sports and ESPN.
Estrella is a 6-foot-11 forward who played against Michigan in the Elite 8. He averaged 10 points per game for the Vols this season to go along with 5.4 rebounds. He only averaged 0.4 blocks per game, so he's not a rim protector.
Estrella is really good around the rim and gives the Wolverines an excellent low-post option. He shot 60 percent on twos last season and was 4 out of 10 on 3-point attempts. The other trait that he brings outside of sheer size, is rebounding.
Estrella was one of the best offensive rebounders in college basketball last season with an offensive rebounding rate of 17.3. He will have two seasons left to play.
The perfect big man for Michigan to start with
Estrella is exactly the kind of big that was probably dying to play for Dusty May. He's ranked fifth among power forwards, and according to 247 Sports, is a breakout candidate.
"Estrella has a ton of counters in his bag for the low-post work. The 6-foot-11, 240-pound big man screams breakout if he can find a featured role and stay healthy."
Morez Johnson and Aday Mara each averaged less than 20 minutes per game before coming to Michigan. They are now projected first-round picks. Estrella could make a similar jump.
Johnson could return. Mara seems gone. Estrella started 18 games last season, but could play as a third big if Michigan keeps Johnson and adds a rim protector. Estrella makes a ton of sense, and from his perspective, so does Michigan.
