Oregon is becoming a thorn in the side of Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham.

It started when the Ducks were able to the land five-star wide receiver Dakota Guerrant, the No. 1 recruit in Michigan for the 2027 class. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound wideout said he didn't really trust the Michigan offense, which was a major reason why he's slated to play for Dan Lanning.

However, Guerrant isn't the only highly-touted pass catcher from the state of Michigan that is headed to Oregon, as four-star tight end Anthony Cartwright III also committed to the Ducks on Sunday, in a decision that was expected, but is still disappointing for Michigan football.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound tight end out of Detroit Country Day is ranked No. 405 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Michigan was in the mix for the blue-chip tight end ranked No. 8 in the state of Michigan in the 2027 class, but he didn't take an official visit to Ann Arbor, so it's not that surprising to see this recruitment go the way that it did.

Colt Lumpris, the four-star tight end committed to Michigan, has a much higher upside than Cartwright. You wouldn't trade those commits, but it would have been set to get the set.

Another in-state decision looms

Three-star wideout Tre Britton is expected to announce a commitment later this week, on Tuesday, actually. Michigan is one of the three finalists, along with Miami and Missouri.

It was a similar story with Britton. Michigan showed some interest, but the three-star recruit only took an official visit to Missouri after taking visits to Ann Arbor in January and April. The Tigers have a 98 percent chance to land the speedy wideout.

Quentin Burrell is the big name for Michigan football at wide receiver in the 2027 class. The Wolverines also have a young depth chart with Salesi Moa, Travis Johhson, Jaylen Pile, Jacob Washington, and Jamar Browder, not to mention Andrew Marsh, J.J. Buchanan and Jaime Ffrench.

One wide receiver seems light on paper, but outside of landing someone like Guerrant, a difference maker, no matter who is on the depth chart, it's smart to preserve a spot for the future or even the portal.

Britton is ranked 11th in the state of Michigan via Rivals for 2027. The Wolverines do have two top-five commitments in the state, so Kyle Whittingham's staff has done some solid work. Missing on Britton isn't something fans should be overly concerned about, even if the Wolverines need to do a better job in the future of keeping talented players in the state.
