Michigan basketball fans have been busy celebrating the Wolverines' first national championship in 37 years. Now, they have the contract extension of Dusty May to celebrate.
Warde Manuel announced at Michigan's championship ceremony that Dusty May has agreed to a contract extension. We don't know the full details but it will be a five-year extension, according to Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press.
"I'm very grateful, and during the tournament, I just told Warde I'm not leaving. And I probably ruined any leverage I could have had. It's an honor to coach at this great institution, and I just look forward to what's next," May said of his contract extension.
Michigan fans have plenty to celebrate
Michigan basketball fans have a lot to look forward to with May locked in as the head coach. That doesn't mean he will stay forever, but it's hard to see May leaving for another college job.
North Carolina is big as it gets. Kansas, Duke, and Kentucky are right there, but if May wanted that kind of job, he could have had it.
The fact is, May already coaches at a blue-blood program. Michigan has all the resources you could want, and has reached the national championship six times in the past 37 years.
I wouldn't be shocked if May eventually left for the NBA, way down the road. John Beilein did that, so did Billy Donovan, Brad Stevens, John Calipari, Rick Pitino, and others. Not every elite college coach goes that route, but May would probably enjoy the challenge.
For now, the Michigan basketball head coach is intent on winning more national championships. He's already focused on reaching the Final Four in Detroit in 2027. The Wolverines have made some key moves already to make that happen, such as landing J.P. Estrella and keeping both Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.
Morez Johnson has hinted at a return. Juke Harris, who visited this weekend, has also been projected to sign with the Wolverines.
The most important move, though, was keeping May around. Michigan needs to do whatever it takes to keep him in Ann Arbor for as long as possible.
