Mike Boynton is proving a lot of people wrong.

Not many probably expected the Michigan basketball interim head coach to be able to retain the entire roster after Dusty May left to coach the Dallas Mavericks, but that's the way things are trending, especially after three more players were retained on Monday.

Oscar Goodman, a 6-foot-7 rising junior, was among those players. He played in 15 games last season for Michigan, but should see minutes at the 3/4. If Jalen Reed isn't ready to go early in the season, Goodman should be able to fill in, along with Quinn Costello. Goodman feels like he could be the second-coming of Will Tschetter, but not quite as good a 3-point shooter.

More Michigan basketball players are coming back

That wasn't the only retention reported on Monday. 7-foot-3 freshman signee Marcus Moeller is also coming back, according to reports. He's not expected to make a major impact this season, but Michigan has excelled with bigger players. Boynton has a strong track record of developing bigs, so there is a good reason for the big man to stay with the Wolverines.

Those two retentions came along with Ricky Liburd, a 6-foot-4 guard, who is also coming back, according to reports.

The rising sophomore didn't play in any games last season, redshirting, which doesn't exist anymore. He will be a valuable piece or could be with his ability to play the two or the three. Liburd should contribute this season, especially with the ability to excel on both ends of the court.

Goodman and Liburd also added depth to the roster. Moeller is more about developing for the future, although he is 7-foot-3, so that could prove to be valuable in terms of rim protection.

There are just a few holdouts at this point. LJ Cason is one of them. The rising junior is expected back. He's recovering from an ACL injury, but is expected to be healthy in time to play in 2026-27; however, not at the start of the season.

Freshman signee Quinn Costello is another. He was ranked no. 32 overall in the 2026 recruiting class. The 6-foot-10 forward is known as one of the best shooters in the class.

As far as Boynton, who is angling for the head coaching job, keeping nearly the entire roster together at this point is a huge positive. It gives him the best chance to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, which is what would just about guarantee him the job moving forward.
